Catalonian Chapel, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists (1150–1200) Unidentified artist (Catalan), 12th century, Fresco secco transferred to plaster and wood. This fresco is among the greatest twelfth-century European paintings in the United States. It once decorated the apse - the semicircular area behind the altar - of the small church of Santa Maria del Mur (Catalan Pyrenees). Huge eyed and solemn, the figure of Christ in majesty dominates the composition. The inscription in the book he holds reinforces Christ's centralization in Christian art and doctrine: "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh into the Father but by me." Christ is surrounded by symbols of all four Evangelists (authors of the New Testament Gospels). Lower tiers contain the twelve Apostles (the original followers of Christ) and scenes from the Bible. Wine cup (kylix). Late Archaic or Early Classical Period, about 480 B.C. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Antiphon Painter. Attic ceramic, Red Figure. Interior: A donkey walks to the left bearing a pack-saddle and a bale of goods. As opposed to mules, which have more horse-like tails, donkeys are distinguished by their tails which have a bushy tuft as the end. Also, donkeys tend to be marked by the dark stripes on their legs in red-figure pottery. On exergue "Laches is handsome" (LAXES KALOS). In field "Nikostratos is handsome" (NIKOSTRATOS KALOS).

High-handled drinking cup (kantharos) with erotic scenes, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Archaic Period, about 520–510 B.C. Potter and Painter: Nikosthenes. Attic ceramic (red figure). Around the edge of the base the inscription. "Nikosthenes made [it]" (NIKOSTHENES EPOIE[S]EN). An orgy is in progress: the figures danced around and grab at each other. The youth at far right (on the other side) wields a sandal with sadistic intent. On the floor are shoes and a basin; on the wall a birdcage, a flute-case, and a dildo. The inscriptions in the fields are meaningless.

Cup interior tondo composition: sex scene: A bearded man bends over a woman with short hair (which may indicate her status as a slave). She braces herself on the stool in front of her which has lion-paw feet and various things piled on top of it, including her clothes. To the left is a couch (kline) which has an elaborately carved post with ionic volutes. An overstuffed striped cushion tops the kline.
Inscription: "the girl is pretty" (HE PAIS KALE) (above their heads), and "Hold still!"(HEXE HESUXOS) (issuing from the man's mouth)
